Getting around Ischia island is easy.
Ischia is a small island, and it’s very easy to travel around the whole island in one day. Of course, there are so many things to do, and places to see and visit, that one day is nowhere near enough.
I found the best way to see the island was by bus. There are so many, and they are so frequent. The only downside about travelling by bus is that everyone else is doing it too, so they can be very crowded, even in late September! Sometimes I literally felt like a sardine! I think it also depends on the time of day.
Useful tip: Avoid travelling by bus during rush hour unless you like feeling like a sardine!
You can buy your bus tickets at the little cigarette kiosks or tobacconists, before boarding the bus, as you cannot purchase tickets on board. Once on board you need to validate your ticket in one of the machines. There are three types of tickets available: 1) A 90 Minute Ticket which costs 1.50€ – this allows you to travel for a maximum of 90 minutes from validation. 2) A Daily Ticket which costs 4.50€ – this allows you unlimited bus travel for the whole day. 3) A Weekly Ticket which costs 14.40€ – this allows you unlimited bus travel for a whole week. If you’re staying in Ischia for 4 or more days, and plan on exploring, this is by far the best option for you. With options 2 and 3 you only have to validate your ticket the first time you board the bus and use it.
Useful Tip: Always carry your bus ticket with you, as the conductors make spot checks, and if you don’t have a valid ticket, you will be fined!
